Green-thumbed Tomato Wranglers

I no longer have any doubt where the saying “you have a green thumb” originated.  It must have been from someone who spent all day working with tomatoes. Last Friday I not only had a green thumb, I had a whole green hand!

I’ve heard that tomato growing is labor intensive – it’s true. Besides multitudes of diseases they can catch, tomatoes grow like weeds.  One of the ever-present tasks at The Pittsburgh Project  farm is ‘stringing up’ the tomato plants to keep them from falling over.  Melody and I spent several scorching hours on Friday afternoon wrestling the tomato plants.  I bet you never knew they could be so feisty.

Eventually, we won the battle, and all was well.

We ‘heart’ tomatoes even when they give us much heartache.

  1. What a fun post! I remember our hands turning green/yellow as children.
